GalataPerform is hosting Ricci and Forte, the Contemporary Italian Theatre’s duo who have been talked about in recent years during the second New Text New Theatre Festival at the end of May this year.
Bearing the distinction of being the first festival focused on scriptwriting in Turkey, this year’s theme of “New Text New Theatre Festival” is “Limits”. As part of the festival there will be readings of the plays of new writers, stage readings, interviews and workshops.
The international guests of the festival this year are the Ricci/Forte duo. The Italian press have called this duo “two great masters of contemporary theatre and modern staging”. They have represented Contemporary Italian Theatre at international festivals with their plays, “Macadamia Nut Brittle”, “Grimmless”, “%100 Furious”, “Abbastarduna”, Pinter’s Anatomy” and “Imitation of Death”
Ricci/Forte who prefer to tell realities of today with realistic dialogue, answer the people who ask about the violence and sexual elements in their plays by saying “We only tell the truth of what we see every day with a poetic language”.
As part of the Second New Text New Theatre Festival, the duo’s, who will be in Istanbul between 23 and 27 May, “Macadamia Nut Brittle” which has been selling out for the past three years in Europe, will be presented as a stage reading. “It’s our dark story about the fears of adults” says IL Secelo XIX about the play. There will be a Q&A session with the duo after the stage reading of the play which handles the European culture’s hopelessness in the face of American and global culture.
In addition, the duo’s play “Grimmless” which they staged in 2011 and wrote based on the Grimm’s Fairy Tales will be shown to residents of Istanbul as video screenings. The duo describes “Grimmless”as “tales without happy endings”.

New Text New Theatre Project
New Text New Theatre, which is an international and innovative project focusing on contemporary theatre and new playwriting styles, has worked on two main axes which are play readings and playwritings since 2006. This text-oriented project opens the stage direction, acting, dramaturgy and stage design these new texts have, up for discussion.
New Text New Theatre Festival, which started as a two-day script writing festival for the first-time last year as part of the New Text New Theatre Project, has the distinction of being the first script writing festival in Turkey. The festival that is being held for the second time will present new scripts from new writers to the audience once again this year.
From December 2012, under the leadership of Yeşim Özsoy Gülan and Ceren Ercan, and the involvement of Okan Urun, Sibel Arslan Yeşilay and Assoc. Dr. Beliz Güçbilmez, new writers participating in the playwriting workshops had the opportunity of working with writers such as Paloma Pedrero from Spain and Peter Arnott from Scotland.
The theme that participants will be focusing on for short plays during the workshops was determined as “Limits”. Five scripts that were developed during the five-month workshop with “Limits” being their theme, were chosen by the New Text New Theatre team. These five texts will meet with audiences as play readings and stage readings as part of the Second New Text New Theatre Festival in May.
